In an effort to help their ailing catchers on Thursday the Oakland Athletics acquired veteran catcher Kurt Suzuki from the Washington Nationals. In the trade the Athletics gave up right-handed pitching prospect Dakota Bacus along with cash considerations. Dakota has spent the year with the Beloit Snappers where he was 9-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 26 games. He was drafted by the Athletics in the 9th round of the June 2012 draft out of Indiana State University.
Kurt rejoins the Athletics after being traded last year the the Nationals for minor league catcher David Freitas and cash considerations. Kurt was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the June 2004 draft and made his Athletics debut in 2007. In his rookie campaign Kurt played in 68 games batted .249 and hit 7 home runs.
Kurt is expected to join the Athletics today as they begin their road trip in Baltimore. The corresponding roster move has not been announced although it is likely that catcher Derek Norris will be placed on the DL with a broken toe.
