Stockton Ports playoff hopes evaporate

Entering the series with Modesto the task to make the playoffs was daunting.  The Ports had to sweep a 4 game series against the Modesto Nuts and the San Jose Giants had to win at least 2 games.  Doing so would give the Ports the opportunity to face off against the same Modesto Nuts in a one game tiebreaker for third playoff spot.

However, there will be no miracles for the Stockton Ports this year.  The Nuts beat the Ports 6-3 on Friday night eliminating any hope the Ports had for the playoffs.  The game unraveled for the Ports in the bottom of the 6th inning as Stockton committed 3 errors in the inning allowing 2 unearned runs to score.  James Simmons was the hard-luck loser.  The loss evens James’s record at 8-8 with a 5.48 ERA.  Scott Oberg came on in the 9th inning to notch his 33rd save of the season tying a Modesto record held by Craig Baker in 2009.

The final series continues through Monday as Stockton now look to try to end the season with a record at or over .500.  With the loss the Ports are 68-69 on the season.
