Rehab appearances and autographs

The relocation of the Oakland Athletics’s AAA club to Nashville has been a blessing for the Stockton Ports fans. As of June 5th there have been 7 players to make rehab appearances with the Stockton Ports.

The first came on opening night, Josh Reddick rehabbed with the Ports as they opened the season in San Bernadino against the Inland Empire 66ers. Jarrod Parker soon joined the Ports for a couple of rehab starts. This was during a road trip that took them through Visalia and Bakersfield to face the Rawhide and the Blaze. Unfortunately both Reddick’s and Parker’s rehab assignments were on the road.

Coco Crisp was the first home rehab assignment for the Stockton Ports. On May 3rd and 4th Crisp played for the Ports. On Sunday, May 3rd I was able to get a MLB ball and 2 cards signed by Crisp. On Monday, May 4th I was able to get one more card signed a 2015 Topps cards (not pictured).

On May 14th and 17th Oakland Athletics’s closer Sean Doolittle made his rehab appearances with the Ports. These were home games, May 14th was a Thursday day game so I couldn’t go due to work. On Sunday, May 17th, I got to see Doolittle pitch, but I was unable to get his autograph because he did not come out to the bullpen until the 3rd inning.

A couple of days later on a road trip to Visalia second baseman Ben Zobrist joined the Ports for a couple of rehab games. On May 23rd Zobrist joined the Nashville Sounds, who happened to be on a West Coast road trip, for a couple for rehab games. I went to the game in Fresno against the Grizzlies and was able to get Zobrist to sign a ball for me.

Sunday, May 31st saw the 6th different Athletic to make a rehab appearance with the Ports. Pitcher Drew Pomeranz threw 2 scoreless innings that day. Most recently former Stockton Port and current Oakland Athletic starting pitcher A.J. Griffin made his first rehab appearance coming off of Tommy John Surgery. He threw 3 innings on June 2nd against the Lake Elsinore Storm and before the game Griffin was nice enough to sign a ball for me.

In addition to all of the prospects that Ports fans get to see on a regular basis, we have been treated to quite a few Oakland Athletics rehab assignments this season. I want to thank the Sacramento River Cats for not wanting to be an Athletics affiliate anymore. Without their desire to switch Ports fans may not get to see as many rehab assignments.

On Wednesday, the Stockton Ports defeated the Lancaster JetHawks 10 to 2 at The Hangar in Lancaster. The victory raises the Ports record to 16-4 in the month of June and they are 7-0 to start the 2nd half.

The offensive onslaught was once again led by Renato Nunez who was 4 for 4 blasting 2 home run in the contest. Over the last 10 games Renato is batting .528 (19 for 36) with 5 home runs and 14 RBIs. Wade Kirkland (1 for 4) hit his 2nd home run of the season. Matt Olson slammed his 20th home run of the season going 2 for 4 on the day.  All of Stockton’s starters got at least one hit in the game except for Ryon Healy who contributed with a sac fly in the 1st inning to drive in the game’s 2nd run.

California League Prevails in All-Star Game

The California League won the All-Star game by the score of 3-2 over the Carolina League on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE. The Annual All-Star game showcases some of the finest talent in the Class A High level.

Kyle Waldrop of the Bakersfield Blaze provided all of the runs for the California League. He singled in the 2nd inning driving in Brandon Drury. In the 4th inning Kyle hit a 2-run home run.  Pitching was the order of the night as the pitchers on both sides dominated allowing only 11 hit in the contest.

Bruce Maxwell and Seth Streich represented the Stockton Ports at the game. Bruce went 0-2, but did throw out Chris Garia who was trying to steal 2nd base in the 3rd inning. Seth pitched a scoreless 3rd inning, giving up only 1 hit. He was on the mound when Bruce threw out the would-be base stealer.

The 2nd half of the season begins on Thursday, June 19th as the Stockton Ports take on the Bakersfield Blaze at Banner Island Ballpark.

Stockton Ports Slug Their Way to Victory

The Stockton Ports out hit the High Desert Mavericks en route to a 9-7 victory at Banner Island Ballpark on Monday night. At first it seemed like it would be a night of follow the leader. Stockton scored 3 in the bottom of the 3rd, and the Mavericks came right back and scored 3 in the top of the 4th. The Ports would add 1 on a solo home run by Bobby Crocker in the bottom of the 5th. Then in the top of the 6th Travis Witherspoon would hit his first of 2 home runs.

Then in the bottom of the 6th inning Bruce Maxwell would put the Ports up for good with a 3-run blast into the visitor’s bullpen. In the 7th inning the Mavericks could only respond with 1 run. Stockton would add 2 more in the 8th on Ryon Healy’s 2 run double. High Desert would add 2 more in the 9th, but Nolan Sanburn would get D.J. Peterson looking, as he came to bat as the potential tying run.

Hunter Adkins gets the victory improving his record to 2-3 with a 5.57 ERA. He struck out 4 batters in 6 innings. The losing pitcher was Scott DeCecco. His record falls to 2-6 with a 6.90 ERA.

After a day off on Tuesday, the Ports will travel to San Jose to begin a 4 game set with the Giants that will wrap up the first half. The California/Carolina League All-Star game will take place on June 17th. The Ports will start the second half at home after the All-Star Break on June 19th against the Bakersfield Blaze.

Showoff Sunday: Autographed Baseballs

For my first Showoff Sunday, I decided to showoff the 4 autograph baseballs I have collected so far this season.

The first ball was signed by Stockton Ports pitcher Tim Atherton. On Tuesday April 22, 2014 Tim pitched 7.1 perfect innings leading the Ports to a 6-2 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm. This ball was signed after the game.

The next ball was signed by a young prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system, Julio Urias. Julio is only 17 years old is currently playing for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He was signed as a free agent out of the Mexican League in 2012. Julio looks like someone to watch over the next couple of seasons as he matures.

The next ball was autographed by former Major League pitcher Tom Browning. Tom is best know for pitching a perfect game for the Cincinnati Reds against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988. He was also on the pitching staff of the 1990 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds. Tom is currently the pitching coach for the Bakersfield Blaze, the Class A advanced affiliate of the Reds.

The final ball I have had autographed so far this season was by movie director Ron Shelton. Ron was a part of the 1969 Stockton Ports team that won the California League Championship. After his time in the minors Ron went on to become a famous movie director. He has directed such films as Tin Cup, Cobb and Bull Durham. This ball was signed at the Stockton Ports Alumni Night on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
