Boog Powell Earns MVP Honors at Midwest League All-Star Game

Beloit Snappers outfielder, Herschel “Boog” Powell was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Midwest League All-Star game. The Western Division defeated the Eastern Division by a score of 7-0 in the 50th Midwest League All-Star Game.

Boog Powell led the charge as he went 1-3 with a 2-run double in the 6th inning, plating Juan Herrera (Peoria Chiefs) and C.J. McElroy (Peoria Chiefs). In addition Boog walked twice, scored 3 runs and stole 2 bases. He currently leads the Midwest League in batting with a .338 average. and On-Base Percentage at .450. It looks like it will not be long before the former 20th round pick of the Oakland Athletics during the 2012 June Draft will be making his way up to the Stockton Ports.

Other Snappers in the All-Star Game
Pitcher Kyle Finnegan made the start for the Western Division and earned the win throwing one inning and striking out one batter. Reliever Andres Avila came in the pitch in the 9th inning of the game and recorded the final out of the game.

Third baseman Luis Baez came on in the 6th inning replacing Clint Coultier (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) as DH. Baez went 1-2 on the night.

Beloit Boasts 4 All-Stars in the Midwest League

On Wednesday, the All-Star rosters for the Midwest League All-Star Game were announced. Among the representatives for the Western Division are 4 Beloit Snappers. The Midwest League All-Star Game will take place on June 17th at Fifth Third Ballpark, home of the West Michigan WhiteCaps.

Outfielder Boog Powell was named to the starting lineup for the Western Division. Boog is batting .350 with 2 home run, 14 RBIs and 11 stolen bases to go along with his .462 OBP. He was drafted in the 20th round of the 2012 June Draft.

Shortstop Luis Baez made the All-Star team after beginning the season with a .256 average 17 doubles and 16 RBIs. Baez was signed by the Oakland Athletics as a non-drafted free agent in April 2008.

2 Snapper pitchers made the All-Star roster. Andres Avila has been string out of the pen this season posting a 3.04 ERA while notching 7 saves and striking out 21 batters. Andres was signed by the Oakland Athletics as a non-drafted free agent in April 2010.

Kyle Finnegan is the other pitcher from the Snappers who made the team. He is 5-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 11 starts. On May 16th Kyle pitched a complete game shut out against the Clinton LumberKings. Kyle was drafted in the 6th round of the 2013 June Draft.

Friday night was an organizational sweep for the Oakland Athletics. The Oakland Athletics decisively won 11-1 against the Cleveland Indians. In the farm system the Sacramento River Cats dominated the Tacoma Raniers. The Midland RockHounds and Stockton Ports both scored the go ahead run late in the game to secure the victory. The Beloit Snappers were the biggest winners of the night as they swept a double header against the Clinton LumberKings. On Saturday each team will continue their respective series.

On Thursday it took extra inning for the Sacramento River Cats and the Midland RockHounds to earn the victory. The Stockton Ports lost a weekday matinee against the San Jose Giants. In the Midwest League the Beloit Snappers and the Clinton LumberKings were rained out so they will play a double header on Friday. Up next, the RockHounds travel to Corpus Christi to play the Hooks. The Stockton Ports welcome in the Bakersfield Blake in the start of a 4 game set.

On Wednesday the Stockton Ports winning streak came to an end. The Midland RockHounds scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th for the walk-off win. In the Midwest League the Beloit Snappers out dueled the Kane County Cougars. On Thursday the Ports will wrap up their series with the San Jose Giants. The Snappers will travel to Clinton to face the LumberKings. The RockHounds will continue their battle against the RoughRiders. In Sacramento the River Cats will start a weekend series with the Tacoma Rainiers.

Snappers hold on to defeat River Bandits 4-3 in game 2

The Beloit Snappers came out of the gate strong on Sunday in game 2 of the semifinals in the Midwest League playoffs.  In the bottom of the 1st the Snappers jumped ahead of the Quad Cities River Bandits on a 2-run home run by Chris Bostick off the River Bandits’s starter Zach Morton.  The Snappers would tack on another run when Brett Vertigan drove in Renato Nunez with a RBI single.  The River Bandits would answer with 2 runs of their own in the top of the 2nd.  In the bottom of the 2nd Chris Bostick drives in Sam Roberts to give Beloit their 4th run of the game.  This would turn out to be the deciding run as the Snappers would outlast the River Bandits and win by the score of 4-3.

Chris Bostick provided most of the offense for the Snappers on Sunday.  He went 3 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.  Chris is batting .500 (8 for 16) in the postseason with 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. Nolan Sanburn gets his 1st win of the postseason and Austin House records his first save.  Austin notched the win in Game 1 of the 1st round against the LumberKings in a game that went 10 innings.

The deciding game will be played Monday night at Pohlman Field.  The Snappers will start Derek De Young (8-5, 4.22 ERA) against Daniel Minor (8-3, 3.71 ERA) for the River Bandits.  Derek pitched in Beloit’s 1st game of the playoffs.  He went 4 innings giving up 1 run on just 3 hits.  Derek was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 18th round of the 2012 Draft out of Oakton Community College in Illinois.

Snappers win Game 2 advance to 2nd Round

The Beloit Snappers defeated the Clinton LumberKings on Thursday night by the score of 6-2.  With the win the Snappers sweep the 1st Round of the Midwest League Playoffs and advance to the 2nd Round.  The Snappers will take on the Quad Cities River Bandits starting on Saturday in Quad Cities.

Dylan Covey earned the win as he allowed just 1 earned run in 6 innings pitched.  The offense was led tonight by John Wooten who doubled in 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th putting the Snappers up 5-1.  John would score two batters later when Brett Vertigan reached on an error by the shortstop Brock Hebert.

The pitching match up for Round 2 has yet to be decided.  Games 2 & 3 will be played at Pohlman Field home of the Snappers.

Game Notes: The regular season series between the Beloit Snappers and the Quad Cities River Bandits is tied 7-7.  The most recent series was August 31-September 2.  Quad Cities won that 3 game series 2-1.

Snappers win Game 1 in 10 innings

The Beloit Snappers won game 1 of the 1st round of the Midwest League Playoffs over the Clinton LumberKings 9-6.  The offensive charge was led by Chris Bostick who was 4 for 5 with a double, home run and 4 RBIs.

After scoring 3 runs in the top of the 9th, the Snappers took a 5-2 lead going into the bottom half of the inning, but the LumberKings would not go quietly.  They scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th off Snappers’s reliever Austin House to tie the game.  In the 10th inning the Snappers’s bats would come alive once again.  The Snappers would load the bases with no outs on 2 singles and a walk.  Second baseman Chris Bostick smashed a double to left field scoring Daniel Robertson, Matt Olson and John Wooten.  With 2 outs Nick Rickles would single to drive in Bostick.  Austin would pitch the 10th to, this time, wrap up the game for the Snappers.  The only hiccup for Austin in the bottom of the 10th was a solo home run hit by Marcus Littlewood.

The series continues tonight in Beloit at Pohlman Field at 6:30 p.m. CT.  It’s the battle of the Dylans to night as Dylan Covey (1-1, 4.75 ERA) takes the mound for the Snappers.  He will face off against Dylan Unsworth (4-1, 2.32 ERA) gonig for the LumberKings.
