Sogard’s Glasses: Predicting the Stockton Ports Roster

About “Sogard’s Glasses”: Occasionally I will predict or suggest things that I think will happen during the course of the season, I decided to call these posts “Sogard’s Glasses.” This stems from a Tweet I saw during the Face of MLB competition: #EricSogard ‘s glasses are so strong they can see the future. I don’t remember who tweeted that, but I thought it would be a good feature title.

I have been paying close attention to the Oakland Athletics minor league system now for the part 2-1/2 years. I thought it would be fun to take some time and predict the opening day roster for the 2014 Stockton Ports. Why the Ports? Well quite simply it is because they are my home team and I go to at least half of their home games.

Here is how I think the 2014 roster for the Stockton Ports will shape up.

Position Players
Starters:
C: Bruce Maxwell
1B: Matt Olson
2B: Daniel Robertson
3B: Renato Nunez
SS: Wade Kirkland
OF: Billy McKinney
OF: Brett Vertigan
OF: Rashun Dixon

Bench:
C: Nick Rickles
3B: B.A. Vollmuth
OF: Dusty Robinson
OF: Aaron Shipman

Pitchers
Starters:
Andres Avila
Derek DeYoung
Ryan Doolittle
Chris Jensen
Seth Streich
Michael Ynoa

Bullpen:
Jeremy Barfield
Kris Hall
Tucker Healy
Austin House
Deyvi Jiminez
Nolan Sanburn
Vincent Voiro

Keep in mind I have no inside information. This is all for fun and just guess work based on player performance from last year. I listed 6 starters in the rotation as the Oakland Farm System has a long history of using a 6-man rotation.

TTM Success 03/06/2014: 3 from Spring Training

After a drought of 10 days I finally received some more TTM successes. Today was my best single day success as I received 3 responses. All 3 were from the first batch of Spring Training TTMs that I sent out on February 18, 2014. Included in today’s mail were: Ryan Cook, Sean Doolittle and Eric Sogard.

Ryan Cook is one of the primary setup guys for the Oakland Athletics and is entering his third year with the club. He was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2008 June draft. Ryan signed a 2013 Topps Heritage and 2013 Topps. Unfortunately the 2013 Topps was smeared when he put it back in the penny sleeve, but it happens. It is still a success.

The next one I received is from the hard-throwing left hander Sean Doolittle. Sean is a converted hitter turned pitcher and I think he made the right choice. He was a componsation pick following the first round of the 2007 June draft.  Sean signed for me a 2012 Choice Stockton Ports card and a 2013 Topps card. I am really excited to get this card back as I needed it for my autographed team set…only a few more to get.

The final success I received today was from 2nd Baseman Eric Sogard. Eric was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the 2007 June draft. Eric signed a 2011 Bowman Chrome Refractor and a 2013 Topps Update.

Spring Training TTMs

Today I mailed my second batch of Spring Training TTMs. This batch consisted of 10 envelopes. Most are to current Oakland Athletics.  Two were sent to former Athletics who are current MLB coaches in other organizations. One was sent to a non-Athletics player. Here are the Spring Training TTMs I have sent out.

Batch #1 – Tuesday, February 18, 2014
Ryan Cook
Sean Doolittle
Tommy Milone
Derek Norris
Jarrod Parker
Eric Sogard

Batch #2 – February 28, 2014
Jesse Chavez
Josh Donaldson
A. J. Griffin
Jed Lowrie
Josh Reddick
Evan Scribner
Dan Straily
Don Baylor, hitting coach for LA Angels of Anaheim
Steve Henderson, hitting coach for Philadelphia Phillies
Hector Santiago, pitcher for LA Angels of Anaheim

I will be posting updates as I receive these cards back. I am considering a third batch of Spring Training TTMs. Not sure for who, but will likely be mostly non-Athletics since I have already sent to most on the Athletics who are confirmed signers. If you have any suggestions please post them in a comment!

Oakland Athletics place Adam Rosales on waivers

In order to clear space for Saturday’s starting pitcher Sonny Gray, the Oakland Athletics placed utility infielder Adam Rosales on waivers.  This was a predictable move as the Athletics have no immediate need for Rosales with the hot-hitting Eric Sogard and back up Alberto Callaspo in the fold.  The Athletics would like to see Rosales clear waivers so they can keep him.  The rosters are set to expand in just a couple of week and the Athletics could surely use a player like Rosales in the stretch drive.
